Compact Housings
Underwater housings for compact cameras are smaller, lighter and more economic compared to mirrorless or dSLR housings which makes them a perfect choice for traveling.
Compact camera underwater housings are made out of polycarbonate (Ikelite, Fantasea, Olympus) or aluminium (Nauticam, Sea&Sea). The main difference is that polycarbonate housings are more economic while aluminium housings are more durable and usually more compact and ergonomic. Due to the small airspace in compact housings the aluminum versions tend to be negatively buoyant. Ask our team for options to help making your underwater camera neutrally buoyant.
Besides the material, the following features are important to consider when buying a housing for a compact camera;
Depth rating: Polycarbonate housings are typically rated to 200ft/60m when aluminum are usually 300ft/90m. Some compacts are waterproof without a housing to a certain depth. It is still advisable to get a housing to allow for deeper dives.
Controls: Most housings allow full control of the camera but some may not allow access to certain buttons or dials. Especially when you plan to use functions like manual shooting mode and focus make sure these functions are accessable.
Wet Lens Compatibility: In addition to the housing it is advisable to use wet lenses for wide angle and macro photography with compact cameras. Some housings allow to screw on lenses directly with a 52mm or 67mm thread and others require an additional adapter. Wet lens compatibility should be carefully considered when choosing your housing.
If you don't own a camera yet make sure to look into our compact camera and underwater housing bundles.
It is strongly advised to consult with us through phone, chat or email for our underwater photographers to guide you to the best housing for your budget and needs.
