Connecting your camera to your BCD in some way is a great idea, especially for smaller cameras, like compacts and smaller mirrorless rigs. In fact, we just published a list of our favorite cameras that can be clipped on to a BCD or fit in a pocket, here. Even with larger cameras, which are harder to drop than small cameras in the water, this is something we still recommend.
The best way to do this is with a dedicated camera lanyard. Underwater lanyards are essentially durable leashes with robust clips to secure to your housing on one end and a D-Ring on your BCD on the other. They come in a variety of lengths and styles, from action camera lanyards to full-size full frame versions.
Our favorite is the BTS – 36″ coil lanyard for most mirrorless size housings. This lanyard collapses and expands, which allows you to attach your camera close to your BCD when not needed and extend it when shooting.

Again, we highly recommend getting some form of lanyard. It’s priceless and ensures you don’t drop your precious gear down a blue hole or lose it floating to the surface. Many divers also require the use of both hands at some point, and being able to let go of your camera entirely without losing it is crucial.
