GoPro Hero 10 for Underwater Photography

The new GoPro Hero 10 Black has just been released, creating plenty of buzz in the world of action cameras and for those looking to capture better underwater footage.

Before we talk about this camera, the best news of the day is that the filters and lenses of the GoPro 9 will also work with the GoPro 10.  More obvious but also worth noting that all the tray packages and video lights for the GoPro 9 are also compatible with the 10.

In general, the Hero 10 prioritizes speed – faster processing power, faster user interface, faster frame rates. It also has the best image quality of any GoPro, ever.

We’ll be updating this review periodically as we generate test footage from the field and put this model through its paces, check back here for everything GoPro 10 related!

GoPro Hero 10 Black: New Features

The key improvements in this year’s newest offering from GoPro revolve around its brand new, updated GP2 processor.

The upgraded processor in the Hero 10 allowed GoPro to boost the camera’s frame-rates in pretty much every area. It can now shoot 5.3K at 60 frames per second, 4K at 120 frames per second, and 2.7K at 240 frames per second.

5.3K at 60 frames per second is pretty impressive – many popular cameras from the last few years still lack 60 fps at 4K, let alone 5K+.

Likewise for 4K 120 –  this can be especially useful underwater, where high frame rates can be used to stabilize video and create extra cinematic effects.

Also new this year is HyperSmooth 4.0, which GoPro promises is their best image stabilization to date, and allows for smoother-than-ever video footage and horizon leveling.

Another cool feature is automatically uploading footage and images to the cloud.

Gopro is really investing in the quality of their stills photos and this is great news for underwater photographers.  Although the quality is still nowhere near the high end compacts like the Sony RX100 but its a lot better than what it used to be.

Underwater Housings and Accessories

Maybe the best part (we think, anyways) of last week’s GoPro announcement is that the Hero 10 can use the same housings as the Hero 9!

This is a rare bonus for underwater photographers used to having to buy a new housing every time a new camera comes out.
