When choosing silicone grease / lubricant for your o-rings, it’s important to get one from the same brand as your gear.
For example, Sea & Sea grease for Sea & Sea strobes / housings, Fantasea grease for Fantasea housings etc.
This is because some o-rings are made from different materials so a specific composition of grease is required to keep them in good shape.
In extreme cases, using the wrong type of grease for your o-ring may even corrode the o-ring in the long run, leading to leaks and possible floods.
Keep in mind that you should put a very very small amount of grease every time you lube your o-rings. Just enough for it to shine, but with no visible patches of grease on the o-rings itself.
The most important time to apply grease is AFTER diving, before putting your housing in storage for a while. This is when the o-rings may dry up and crack.
When storing for a long time, we recommend taking the o-rings out, applying a bit of grease and putting them in closed zip-lock bags till the next time you head to a dive trip. This method will keep them fresh and usable for many years.
