Featured Underwater Photographer – Deon Jonker

One of the best ways to learn photography is to see other photographers’ work. Mozaik looks for some of the best underwater photographers in the world, and showcase their work, along with the gear they use, to help other aspiring photographers improve, learn new skills and get inspired.

This week we will feature the talented Deon Jonker!

About Deon

Hi!  I’m Deon Jonker from Gordon’s Bay, Cape Town, South Africa.

I did my first scuba course in 1999 and what started out as a hobby, soon turned into a full-time passion and scuba diving business, when I opened Indigo Scuba Diving Centre in Gordon’s Bay. Just diving and training new divers was not enough, and I soon realised that I could introduce divers and non-divers to our wonderful underwater world through my photography.

Indigo Scuba is very much underwater photography focussed. We are passionate about helping divers get the right equipment they need to make great underwater images, and taking them diving to see the amazing marine life that can be found here in our waters in Cape Town.

Deon’s Gear

I started taking photos with a film camera in 2002, progressed to a compact in 2004 and today I use a Canon 7D Mark II. My favourite lenses are the Canon 60mm macro lense and the Tokina 10-17 fisheye lense. I use two Sea&Sea YS-D1 strobes.
