The end to shark fin soup in China?

According to Chinese news agency Xinhua, China has just escalated its fight against rare animal hunting, trading and consuming. A new legislation has been introduced against the consumption of any animal among the 420 species on the rare or endangered list. Luckily, sharks are on that list!

This means that if a Chinese person is caught eating shark-fin soup, he might end up in jail for 5 to 10 years.

Eating rare wild animals is not only bad social conduct but also a main reason why illegal hunting has not been stopped despite repeated crackdowns, said Lang Sheng, deputy head of the Legislative Affairs Commission of the NPC Standing Committee, when elaborating on the bill to lawmakers on Monday. Shark fin soup (or shark’s fin soup) is a popular soup item of Chinese cuisine usually served at special occasions such as weddings and banquets, or as a luxury item in Chinese culture. The shark fins provide texture while the taste comes from the other soup ingredients. The soup originated centuries ago during the Ming Dynasty. Demand for the soup has increased as income levels of Chinese communities worldwide have risen. One of the most disturbing facts about shark fin soup, is that the shark’s fins are virtually tasteless! The taste in the soup comes from other ingredient. The fins are just there for texture… Toss some croutons in there instead for heavens sake!!!

Hopefully this act will reduce shark finning in China and help conserve marine life in the area.
