The short answer is no, especially for underwater photographers but let’s look at what advantages some DSLR’s still have:
- Optical Viewfinder: DSLRs use an optical viewfinder that allows photographers to see the scene directly through the lens using a mirror and pentaprism. Some photographers prefer the optical viewfinder experience, especially for fast-paced action photography. This is especially useful if you agree to part $1000-1500 and get a good optical viewfinder for your housing, otherwise, its not very convenient to use underwater.
- Battery Life: DSLRs generally have larger bodies, which accommodate larger batteries, leading to longer battery life compared to many mirrorless cameras.
- Lens Selection: DSLRs have a long-established lens ecosystem with a wide range of lenses available from various manufacturers. These lenses often come in various price ranges, offering photographers more choices to suit their budget and needs. This is gradually changing and very soon if not already is not a DSLR advantage
- Ergonomics: Some photographers prefer the handling and grip of DSLRs, as the larger size can provide a more comfortable and stable shooting experience, particularly with larger lenses. For us underwater photographers, this is no real advantage since the housings take over anyway.
