Featured Underwater Photographer – Sage Ono

One of the best ways to learn photography is to see other photographers’ work. Mozaik looks for some of the best underwater photographers in the world, and showcases their work, along with the gear they use, to help other aspiring photographers improve, learn new skills and get inspired.

This week we will feature the talented Sage Ono!

About Sage

Sage Ono is a photographer interested in exploring and sharing the wonders of the underwater world. After spending 22 years landlocked, he moved to California and an interest scuba diving and underwater photography bloomed into a full-blown obsession. Since moving to Monterey in 2021, Sage spends as much time as possible in the water, whether that’s photographing kelp, surfing, or collecting data for the Reef Check Foundation. Sage’s interest in the underwater world began with the stories his grandfather would tell about the early days of diving in Florida, and Oregon. As he became more involved and experienced in the water he developed an eye for the smaller, subtler moments that often go overlooked and the stories they can tell. With an education in computer science and philosophy, Sage is interested in tinkering with creative photography techniques and exploring how human beings relate to their environments both locally and beyond.

Sages’s Work

A male paper nautilus camouflages amongst a salp chain as it drifts in the channel off of Cozumel, Mexico searching for a mate.

Hidden in plain sight, a Scaber’s Frogfish stares into the camera lens in 5 feet of water at Blue Heron Bridge.

A siphonophore dances beneath the kelp canopy of central california as it slowly breaks apart, unaccustomed to life outside to open seas.

An angelshark patiently waits, unmoving beneath the sand, as photographer and fish alike swim above it.

The next generation develops patiently in the crooks of the Giant Kelp individual, the mother tubesnout has so carefully laid them in.

Above a dead reef in Coral Bay, a lone Lion’s Mane jelly floats above the algae encrusted remains of it’s closely related cousins.

A pair of Red Bass cruise the Great Barrier Reef in search of smaller fish to munch on.

symmetry: the lines of a sea pen make for the lovely latticed pattern in which a candy crab perches.

Modern times call for modern solutions as a coconut octopus settles for a discarded bottle instead of the typical shell in Anilao, Philippines.

Outlined by snell’s window, a hungry cormorant dives down to search for food in the cold murky waters of the Monterey Bay.

The gaps between kelp individuals create a small room; perfectly calm and dark save for the sunburst peeking through the fronds.
