Canon Fights Back – EOS R Full Frame Mirrorless Revealed

Earlier this week we published the much expected release of the Nikon Z 6 and Z 7 full frame mirrorless cameras. Canon’s response was not late to follow with the recent release of their own innovative FF mirrorless camera – the Canon EOS R.

Canon has created a new lens mount for this new line of cameras, called the RF mount, which is deemed as nothing less than “revolutionary” by Canon.

The short distance between the base of the lens and the sensor (AKA Flange distance) is only 20mm, which allows lenses to be simpler and optically superior.

Several RF-Mount lenses have already been announced, including:

  • RF 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM
  • RF 50mm f/1.2L USM
  • RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM
  • RF 28-70mm f/2L USM

In addition, 3 adapters have been announced:

  • Standard Adapter to Canon EF mount lenses
  • Drop-In Filter Adapter (might be useful for underwater?)
  • Control Ring Mount Adapter

We expect underwater housings to be announced by the end of the year, once the manufacturers get their hands on this camera and lenses!

As usual, we expect to see underwater housings for the Canon EOS R by Nauticam, Ikelite, Aquatica, Sea & Sea, Nimar and perhaps others.

The full frame mirrorless world has become much more interesting, with more players joining the arena (rumors say Panasonic is joining soon as well…). For consumers, this is only good news! More options, more competition, lower prices, innovative technology and exceptional imaging tools for our underwater adventures!

The Canon EOS R will be available in October, for a retail price of $2299 USD for the body only.
