DEMA 2014 Summary – Part I
This year’s show was a been a great success, with lots of innovative manufacturers and many cool stuff to play around with. Lets go over some of the new things introduced this year:
Aquatica
Aquatica have just announced a whole new line of TLC arm system, with improved arm sections, clamps and accessories. The sleek new design is a great improvement over the previous arm system, with better pricing as well.
Even though they specialize in DSLR’s and Mirrorless cameras, GoPro has not been overlooked and Aquatica has introduced a few very nice mounting options for the small action camera, including a tripod and very sturdy tray, using the same excellent grips which we are familiar with on their DSLR housings.
We were also very excited to put our hands on the upcoming Panasonic GH4 housing. Aquatica have put some serious effort into the mirrorless market, creating a new port system to accommodate the Olympus & Panasonic lenses and have had a successful run with the AE-M1 housing.
The GH4 housing has everything you can expect from Aquatica – great ergonomics, rugged and durable design, easy to reach controls and several mounting options for accessories.
Nauticam
There is quite a buzz around the Canon G7X and Panasonic LX100 lately, and Nauticam were wise to announce a high-end housing for these remarkable little cameras. In addition, following the success of the SMC Macro Lens, they have released a new CMC Lens, dedicated for compact cameras and optimizing quality when using cameras such as the Sony RX100 III, Canon G7X or the Panasonic LX100 for macro shots.
The LX100 and G7X even got their own little port system, with interchangeable ports which include a dome port and 2 flat ports. We haven’t seen a lot of manufacturers offering dome ports for compacts so this is quite a neat feature.
Ikelite
Ikelite have recently renovated their Arm System to Type II, just as Aquatica did, so it was great to see the new mounting options available on the new system, featuring a rail design which allows mounting a slider with a ball mount, lens holder, or any other accessory.
The mirrorless section also evolved with some new port options and new housings for the Olympus OM-D E-M10 and Olympus PEN E-PL7, TTL included in both with Ikelite DS Strobes.
Finally, a whole fluorescent kit was introduced, including filters for the Vega and DS160/161, housing filters, and a yellow mask filter, allowing you to take a shot at this up and coming photography method.
Recsea
Recsea are known for the highly resistant housings, favored by the military for hardcore field use. This year their greatest innovation is a machine graded Delrin housing for the Canon G7X and Sony RX100 II. This is a completely new type of housing in the market and we have high expectations from it. The result is a high-end, compact housing at a lower price range, competing with higher priced housings such as Nauticam‘s and Sea & Sea.
