Featured Photographer – Craig Dietrich

Every week we will feature an underwater photographer who managed to leave us breathless.

This week’s featured photographer is Craig Dietrich!

About Craig:

Photography is an essential part of my life. For over twenty years, I have dedicated my life to this timeless art.  As a Naval photographer during both Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, I had the opportunity to travel to amazing places all over the world, which fit perfectly with my thirst for adventure.  During those travels, I was able to photograph images that allowed others the sense of “being there”.  I continued my photography career after the Navy by becoming a children’s and family photographer.

Growing up, I had a fear of water.  I wouldn’t even put my feet in for fear of what might be waiting below the surface.  I didn’t  learn to dive until my late 20s, when I was given the opportunity to go on a dive vacation, and my sense of adventure finally won out over my fear.  Once in the water, it was as if a whole other world had opened up to me.  I loved the peace and tranquility the underwater world afforded me so much that I became a scuba instructor.

After being a topside photographer for more than twenty years, I decided to put my two greatest loves of photography and diving together and ventured into underwater photography.  My images allow me to share my world with those not yet brave enough to conquer the same fears I had.

Living in South Florida, I’m lucky enough to be near the water on a daily basis.  I am a member of the prestigious South Florida Underwater Photography Society (SFUPS–see link on this page), and as a group we celebrate not only photography, but conservation of our most magnificent wonder–the ocean.  My wish is to get others just as excited about underwater photography so they too can realize how important it is to preserve our most precious resource.
