Featured Underwater Photographer – Samé to Hoshi

One of the best ways to learn photography is to see other photographers’ work. Mozaik looks for some of the best underwater photographers in the world, and showcases their work, along with the gear they use, to help other aspiring photographers improve, learn new skills and get inspired.

About Samé to Hoshi

I have been photographing sharks as main subject for the last several years. Other than USA, my home base, I have been to the Bahamas, Mexico, Costa Rica, Colombia, Philippines, South Africa… and now regularly in Japan, making friends with the local hammerhead sharks. My current mission is to read their mood and perfect my moves, so I can always get very near (< 1 meters) for close shots.

Samé to Hoshi‘s Gear

I have been using Canon 5D Mark III for the longest time, with Nauticam housing. Canon 8-15mm fisheye lens has been my choice for most of the shark photos, but sometimes Sigma 15mm fisheye depending on the subject and lighting.

For strobes, I have used Sea & Sea YS-D1 and YS-D2 for a while and now Inon Z-330.
I’m happy with all my gears, but I especially love my Nauticam housing. It survived many rough conditions over the last 8 years, banging it on the boat, shark smashing into it a few times, been tossed and thrown in airports with other diving gears — not one major issue to date.
