Featured Underwater Photographer – Helen Walne

One of the best ways to learn photography is to see other photographers’ work. Mozaik looks for some of the best underwater photographers in the world, and showcase their work, along with the gear they use, to help other aspiring photographers improve, learn new skills and get inspired.

About Helen

I am a writer and freediver based in Cape Town, South Africa, and nothing makes me happier than dipping down into our kelp forests to bathe in their quiet beauty. I am a self-taught photographer still working out half the dials on my housing, and am drawn to color and light and soft scenes. I like to think my work contributes a feminine energy that evokes an emotional response to a watery world that, sadly, faces an uncertain future.

I started out using an Olympus TG5, and a Big Blue AL1300NP torch for macro shots. The Tough is a brilliant compact camera with an incredible microscope function, and I still take mine out, as it can be popped down my swimsuit and pulled out if I come across something interesting.

I have since graduated to a Sony A7iii mirrorless with a Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art Lens in Isotta housing, and am slowly getting the hang of using a manual, hefty set-up.
