Featured Underwater Photographer – Helen Brierley

One of the best ways to learn photography is to see other photographers’ work. Mozaik looks for some of the best underwater photographers in the world, and showcases their work, along with the gear they use, to help other aspiring photographers improve, learn new skills and get inspired.

This week we will feature the talented Helen Brierley!

About Helen

I have always been drawn to the water, whether it’s a swimming pool or the ocean and I never miss an opportunity to be on it or in it. My first underwater camera was a Nikonos V, back in the days of film, but these days you will find me diving with a Nikon DSLR, sailboat racing with GoPro cameras or kayaking with both.

I have been diving and sailing all over the world and seen first-hand the disastrous effects we humans are having on our marine environment. For the past ten years I have been on the Board of Reef Check Foundation, a worldwide marine conservation organization (www.ReefCheck.org) and was Board Chair for four of those.

I enjoy sharing what I have learned about underwater photography and conservation by leading workshops to key dive destinations around the globe. Hands down my favorite underwater subject is the octopus, they are so playful and intelligent and I cannot bear to see them on display in the supermarket or on the menu in a restaurant.

I guess I’m a bit of an adrenaline junkie too as a couple of my best trips have been shooting crocodiles in Chinchorro and orcas inside the Arctic Circle in Norway in the Winter.
