One of the best ways to learn photography is to see other photographers’ work. Mozaik looks for some of the best underwater photographers in the world, and showcases their work, along with the gear they use, to help other aspiring photographers improve, learn new skills and get inspired.

This week we will feature the talented Andrés Moreno!

About Andrés

My name is Andrés, originally from Madrid, but I have been living in Southeast Asia for almost 10 years now and I’m currently based in Sulawesi, Indonesia.

After a few years working in telecommunications in Europe, I decided to make a change in my lifestyle and moved to Southeast Asia. That meant a big change in my career, becoming a dive instructor and working in different locations in dive shops, resorts and liveaboards.

I am currently based in Tompotika Dive Lodge, in Pulau Dua, Sulawesi, where I manage the dive resort and my partner manages the Marine Protected Area surrounding it. We are lucky to live here also with our daughter, in a tiny and remote village surrounded by amazing nature.

I always was atracted to underwater photography, but I started practicing it a bit more seriously about 4 years ago, when I got a new camera system with strobes and wet lenses. Thanks to my location I can dive often and I get to practice a lot of macro photography, which is the kind I enjoy the most.

Andrés Work

Filefish on cirinoid: I really like the composition on this one, with the feathers of the cirinoid around the filefish.

Trevally inside jellyfish: Feels like the tiny fish is floating lost in space.

Elegant squat lobster: They only grow up to 2cm, but it’s really amazing the pattern and the contrast of the black and white stripes.

Mandarin fish: With a lot of patience I managed to get this mandarin fish in the right position and quite close, during a sunset dive in Lembeh.

Banded sea krait. This snake was looking for food around the sandy bottom moving fast.

Squid: During a night dive this squid was attracted to my light, kind of dancing around so I could take a few shots.

Nudibranch: goniobranchus Aureopurpureus.

Stargazer: These grumpy looking fish hide under the sand to catch their prey, so if you approach slowly they’re easy to shot as they hardly move.

Giant frogfish: With the light of the strobe the frogfish looks white, but underwater it looked bluish, perfectly camouflaged with the sponge.

Seahorse: Playing with red light for a silhouette effect.

Black corals: One of the reefs in Tompotika, Pulau Dua, so full of life.

White tip reef shark patrolling the reef.

Sperm whale: I was very lucky to be in the water with this beautiful whale. It was close to the coast and moving slowly. Very sadly, the day after it was found stranded and dead on a beach nearby.
