The Olympus EM1 II

The Olympus EM1 II was a groundbreaking flagship camera for Olympus when it was released in in the beginning of 2017. At the time, it was one of the fastest-shooting mirrorless cameras from any manufacturer, capable of shooting at speeds up to 18 fps mechanical or an astonishing 60 fps with the electronic shutter.

The EM1 II has a 20.4 Live MOS sensor and excellent in-body image stabilization, especially when paired with Olympus PRO lenses. In fact, this model still outperforms many competitors in terms of image stabilization in 2021, 4 years after its release.

Members of the Mozaik staff have used this model extensively, and report extremely robust weather sealing and all-around versatility. “It’s small enough to throw in a backpack for an 8-mile hike with lenses covering 16mm-840mm FF equivalent, or, even more impressively, throw in a backpack with a pro-grade underwater housing and several additional lenses.”

Today, the EM1 II still holds its own against newer, more expensive models, and is still a good choice, especially for underwater photography. It’s heavily discounted against newer models, as well.

Housings for the EM1 II are available from most major housing manufactures, including Ikelite, Nauticam, Aquatica, and Olympus. Some top lens choices for wide angle are the Olympus 8mm 1.8 fisheye or the Olympus 7-14mm 2.8 rectilinear, and for macro, the Olympus 60mm 2.8.
