The Canon R6: An Extremely Capable Alternative to the Canon R5

The Canon EOS R6 is Canon's “younger sibling” to the more feature-heavy Canon R5—but the R6 is absolutely not a slouch. The R6 features a 20.1 megapixel CMOS full-frame sensor, dual SD card slots, and many of the same core specifications as the more expensive R5, including excellent image stabilization, the same base image sensor and image processor as the Canon 1DX Mark III, mechanical shooting up to 12fps or 20 fps with the electronic shutter, and excellent Dual Pixel CMOSAF II autofocusing—all for about 2/3s of the price of the R5.

Underwater photographers will be happy with the autofocus performance, low-light capabilities and more affordable price point of the R6, in addition to a growing lineup of excellent RF-mount canon lenses. The new Canon 100mm 2.8 RF mount macro lens, for example, is particularly exciting for underwater photographers in this ecosystem.

The Canon R6, like the Canon R5, is particularly attractive to existing Canon underwater shooters looking to upgrade to a powerful full frame mirrorless body. For Canon shooters who already own Canon glass, this camera is a logical upgrade over similar models from other manufacturers like Sony or Nikon, as it can be used with EF (with an EF-RF mount adaptor) or RF mount lenses. Adapted EF lenses perform superbly in terms of autofocus on the R5 and R6, and are supported by most housing manufactures like Nauticam, Ikelite, and Aquatica.
