One of the best ways to learn photography is to see other photographers\u2019 work. Mozaik<\/a> looks for some of the best underwater photographers in the world, and showcases their work, along with the gear they use, to help other aspiring photographers improve, learn new skills and get inspired.<\/p>\n

About Matthias<\/strong><\/h2>\n

I was a happy snorkeler for many years and did not intend to start scuba diving. But then in 1994 I changed my mind and got certified. Underwater cameras were no issue, and I had no intention to start photographing at all. But then my non-diving girlfriend bought me an underwater housing for our compact Sony in 2011. She asked me to show her what I saw during my dives, so I started snapping a few shots. They were terrible and I realized I may need some light. So, I got myself a torch. My photos got a bit better but the autofocus was constantly pumping. After that I bought my first good compact camera and a new torch with adjustable focus. My photos got a lot better, and I started to develop a genuine interest in underwater photography. In 2018 I bought a Canon G7X ii that I later complemented with a Scubalamp Supe P53 which is at the same time a torch and a strobe. The result was another leap in photo quality, and now I got really hooked on underwater photography. As the next step, I bought completely new equipment in 2022 and upgraded to full format with a Sony A7C. The P53 strobe was not compatible with it, so I bought two Retra flashes that provide a much more natural light. The P53 is still on board but only as a video light.<\/p>\n

During most of my diving years I was impressed with big things. Whales, sharks, rays, the bigger the better. But as soon as I started photographing a bit more seriously, I discovered the macro world. Today I am obsessed with underwater macro photography, and I always want to know what I have photographed. Therefore, I tend so spend quite some time with the identification of macro critters.<\/p>\n

I live in Switzerland which means the sea is not just around the corner. My passion for underwater photography and my concern for the environment are conflicting. Although I would love to travel more, I limit myself to one flight trip per year. I have done so for many years now and it makes me enjoy my limited time under water even more.<\/p>\n
