Ikelite<\/strong><\/p>\nOut of the box, Ikelite housings can be just a bit less comfortable to use when firing the trigger, as the placement of the shutter toggle is tighter to the body of the housing. However, Ikelite does offer accessories to make things more ergonomic – like a shutter lever extension and back button focus extension.<\/p>\n
Generally, at\u00a0the higher range of their lineup like the R5, Ikelite housings have decent placement of important controls. Their housing is just a bit more boxy and less streamlined.<\/p>\n
In terms of opening and closing the Ikelite R5 housing, the Ikelite housing uses three latches that buckle and unbuckle to open and close the housing. This does create an extra external component on the housing, again highlighting the functional, but not highly efficient or streamlined, nature of Ikelite in general.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Nauticam<\/strong><\/p>\nNauticam housings are considered the most ergonomic housings on the market. Each housing is painstakingly engineered for precision control of the camera, in a way that is usually very easy to use. Take, for example, the placement of the handle in relation to shutter controls.<\/p>\n
Out of the box, the shutter button is placed right where your finger curled around the handle in front. And, the lever on the back is perfectly situated so that you can press one lever on the back of the housing for back-button autofocus with your thumb and then pull the shutter with your index finger. This way, there’s no guessing about half-pressing the shutter, and autofocus is a lock.<\/p>\n
In terms of opening and closing the housing, Nauticam uses two levers that lock and release to close or open the housing back. This is a streamlined and secure-feeling system.<\/p>\n
Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\nNauticam takes the crown in terms of usability and ergonomics.<\/p>\n
Ports (what lenses can I use?)<\/h2>\n Ikelite<\/strong><\/p>\nThe Canon R5 Ikelite housing uses the Ikelite Dry Lock (DL) port system. “Dry Lock” refers to the placement of the o-ring on the outside of the port mount. This improves visibility and reduces the chances of water dropping onto your precious camera sensor.\u00a0DL ports are very lightweight in comparison to other systems.<\/p>\n
In total, Ikelite supports more than 40 lenses for the Canon system in their DL ports. This means that odds are good your lens of choice will be covered by one of their port charts.<\/p>\n
Assembling and locking a DL port into place is not complex, but requires fitting the port into place snugly (pushing the port onto the housing) and then tightening a few locking screws around the port.<\/p>\n
Nauticam<\/strong><\/p>\nNauticam offers a wide lineup of ports for Canon lenses; in total at least 60 (probably more.) Nauticam also creates some innovative corrective and wet lens optics that enhance Canon lenses, like the SMC macro diopters or the WACP wide angle conversion port. These ports that feature optical elements are often very expensive (the WACP is around 9000 dollars), but they offer the highest image quality available.<\/p>\n
Nauticam’s port system is divided by port opening size. N85 Ports are ports with a housing opening of 85mm, N100 Ports are 100mm, N120, and so on. The Canon R5 housing fits into the N120 port system.<\/p>\n
To install a Nauticam port, there is just one lever (circled below) that flips down. This rotates an internal collar mechanism that allows the port to be pushed into place on the housing. Then, when the port is in place, you close the lever, and the port locks into place. This is probably the most efficient system available.<\/p>\n
Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\nBoth Nauticam and Ikelite offer a wide variety of port options, so you probably don’t need to worry about having the lens you want to use supported. They’re both relatively easy to install, but Nauticam’s lever locking system is a bit quicker.<\/p>\n
Strobe connections<\/h2>\n Ikelite<\/strong><\/p>\nIkelite tries hard to keep you in their strobe ecosystem by making some aspects of their housing somewhat proprietary. From Ikelite, you can “shoot almost any strobe with manual exposure using the included Ikelite bulkhead and manual hotshoe.” Or, you can “add a DS Link TTL Converter\u00a0and Ikelite DS strobe for the fastest, most reliable flash exposure available underwater.” Basically, Ikelite wants you to use an Ikelite DS strobe. This is usually the best approach for Ikelite systems – Ikelite strobes work really well with Ikelite housings.<\/p>\n
You can also use other popular strobes like Inons or Sea and Seas, but only via the manual hotshoe. What’s most important to note here is that the Ikelite R5 housing, like most of the other mirrorless housings from Ikelite, does NOT come with fiber optic connections. The only way to trigger strobes is via bulkhead and electronic connections. This is a downside for those who prefer to shoot fiber optic.<\/p>\n
Ikelite DS 230 strobe.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\nNauticam<\/strong><\/p>\nAs opposed to Ikelite, Nauticam features two fiber optic bulkheads standard in the NA-R5 housing. Flash triggering is achieved via one of two optional Flash Triggers: a manual LED trigger (PN 26301), or a TTL Flash Trigger (PN 26321) that uses the built-in fiber optic bulkheads with optional fiber-optic cables to trigger supported strobes.<\/p>\n
For controlling strobes that do not support fiber optic flash triggering, a variety of legacy hot-shoe flash control bulkheads is available.<\/p>\n
You can thus shoot Inon Z330 or Sea and Sea YSD3 strobes (our most popular professional strobes) with fiber optic cables, using either manual or TTL control. I prefer fiber optic connections to electronic – they can’t flood (there’s no connection through the housing from your strobe to your camera, just a ‘window’ that the flash trigger sends its signal through).<\/p>\n
The fiber optic bulkheads on the NA R5.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\nConclusion<\/strong><\/p>\nIf you use the Ikelite system, you can’t use fiber optic strobes. This is a common issue with some people not realizing they can’t trigger their strobes via fiber and buying fiber optic cables instead of electronic cables. And, if you want to shoot TTL, you’ll need to use Ikelite DS strobes.<\/p>\n
With Nauticam, you have more options available because of the fiber optic connections – you can use any fiber optic-compatible strobes, or go for an electronic connection and bulkhead. We recommend the fiber.<\/p>\n
Vacuum System<\/h2>\n Ikelite<\/strong><\/p>\nThe Ikelite R5 housing comes with a vacuum valve installed, but you’ll have to buy the pump and gauge separately for about $70. This is a simple system where you draw out the from your housing using the pump, and then wait for a few minutes (or longer) and check the pressure gauge. If the gauge shows the same reading as when you started, you know your housing is holding the vacuum and you can safely assume you’re going to be watertight.<\/p>\n
Nauticam<\/strong><\/p>\nThe Nauticam vacuum check and leak detection electronics are shipped with the NA-R5 as standard equipment. Combined with an accessory vacuum valve, this monitoring system provides constant updates on the watertight and safe-to-dive status of the housing.<\/p>\n
A simple color-coded LED lighting system lets the user know that the vacuum is solid, or that the housing is losing vacuum. Leak detection is built into the same circuit, so if there is water intrusion, an audible and visual indication will occur. Red LED: you’ve got a big problem. Yellow LED: you’re losing seal. Green LED: you’re sealed and ready to go.<\/p>\n
The Nauticam system is temperature compensated, eliminating false alarms caused by a change in outside temperature, or from a camera heating up on an action-packed dive.<\/p>\n
Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\nBoth of these housings will allow you to pull a vacuum and confirm your seal before diving. The big advantage here of the Nauticam housing is the real-time electronic \u00a0monitoring of your housing’s vacuum status.<\/p>\n
Being able to confirm that your expensive setup is ready to dive, at all times, is a giant benefit. If you check the seal on an Ikelite housing, put away the gauge and pump, and then wait 20 or 30 mins to dive, something could happen in-between that compromises the seal and you wouldn’t know. Alternatively, you know at all times whether you are ok to get in the water or not with your Nauticam housing, via the LED on the back of the housing.<\/p>\n
Cost (is it worth it?)<\/h2>\n Ikelite<\/strong><\/p>\n$1695.00 for just the housing<\/p>\n
Nauticam<\/strong><\/p>\n$5,159.00 for just the housing<\/p>\n
Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\nWell, there’s no question about this one. Nauticam is EXPENSIVE. Ikelite, comparatively, is incredibly affordable. In fact, you could buy about THREE Ikelite housings for the price of the one Nauticam. Is it justified? We’ll discuss in the next section.<\/p>\n
What should I do?<\/h2>\n As you go category by category, you can see the ways that Nauticam and Ikelite housings differ. In general, Nauticam housings are more ergonomic, more robust, and offer more features and compatibility.<\/p>\n
But, do they offer TRIPLE the features of Ikelite?<\/strong><\/p>\nIf you’re buying your first underwater camera housing for your Canon R5, you’re not unaccustomed to spending kind of a lot on camera stuff. The R5 runs at least $3000 dollars and often more, plus likely a couple thousand for lenses, memory cards, etc. But the cost of an entire system to take your R5 underwater will likely be a LOT more than what you’ve spent on just the above-water camera stuff. You’ll need a couple of lens ports, arms, clamps, strobes, and more – these costs quickly add up.<\/p>\n
So, two things that are guaranteed are: you don’t want to spend more money than you need to, and you don’t want to spend money on the same things twice.<\/p>\n
Once you invest an underwater camera housing system, you’re kind of “married” to that system. You’ll have ports and accessories that will continue to work with that type of housing ecosystem, even if you upgrade or change cameras and camera housings in the future. Your Nauticam ports will likely work with the next model up of Nauticam housing, and your Ikelite ports will work with the next model of Ikelite housing. So, you’re choosing for the present, yes, but also for the future.<\/p>\n
So, when choosing between these two systems, keep in mind that you’ll likely stay with one manufacturer or another for longer than just this camera.<\/h4>\n That being said, the next thing is to really think about what you need from your camera. What kinds of things do you want to photograph? Wide angle? Macro? Do you want to do a lot of video? In order to photograph or record those things, what do you need? If you require really fine control of your camera (a lot of quick adjustments to settings, manual focus control, etc), the large extra cost of the Nauticam housing may be justified. The Nauticam housing is easier and faster to adjust than the Ikelite housing. Also, consider the vacuum electronics and real-time leak monitoring. Is this peace of mind important to you? Or is the pre-dive vacuum check enough?<\/p>\n
At the end of the day, the Nauticam housing is an expensive, top-of-the-line option with streamlined controls, tons of accessories and high end optic options. The Ikelite housing is 1\/3 the cost, and gets your Canon R5 into the water with you, safely, with access to the controls. You’ll likely have a lot of extra funds for accessories with Ikelite. But, do you want to use a particular strobe, and do you want to use TTL? Remember that this is a limitation that needs to be considered (see above strobe section).<\/p>\n
