Big Blue VTL2500P Video Light Review
UPDATE 2015: The VTL2500P has been replaced by the stronger VTL2800P featuring 2800 lumens. Other features remained the same.
The new Big Blue VTL2500P is one of the leading video lights for 2014 thanks to its dual function – both a 2500 Lumen flood beam at 120° and a 900 Lumen narrow beam at 10°.
The light is controlled by a single multi function push-button, which serves as an on/off switch and controls the 4 levels of brightness for the flood beam, 1 level for narrow beam and 1 level for the red beam.
Surrounding the button is a circular LED battery indicator, which is very helpful in planning your dive, and the package includes a sturdy Goodman-style glove allowing hands-free operation, a standard 1″ ball for mounting on any ball joint arm system, a removable yellow filter, a Lithium ion battery and charger.

We had a chance to test it out recently and we were very impressed.
The first this we noticed is that it’s strong. Very strong. For that price ($429.95), it’s hard to find a video light that produces that much light.
The flood mode will give a nice wide and uniform beam, not as uniform as the I-Torch Pro6 for example, but still quite pleasing.
A yellow filter included in the package can be easily attached and removed for a warmer lighting temperature.
Usability in general is very good, though we did get confused a few times when switching between modes, until we got the hang of it.
The concept is that each mode has its own button combination to control. Short click is for Flood mode, turning it on / off or switching between power modes ( only when starting up ). Fast double click controls the Red mode. Long press controls the spot mode. You can switch from every mode to the other using its button code regardless if you are on Off mode or any of the other two.
The physical size of the light is slightly larger than the Sola or the I-Torch, but when mounted on your system with the ball mount or even using the Goodman glove, it isn’t noticeable and makes hardly any difference.
Adapters and Mounts
The package includes a standard ball mount, which is great for fitting your Ball & Joint system and if removed can easily be fitted with a universal mount thanks to its standard shape.
The other mount that comes with the package is a Goodman style glove, which is quite comfortable and allows you full use of your hand while the light is mounted on the back of the hand securely.
We tested it out against the I-Torch Pro6 and you can see some of the results here:
The VTL2500P is also powerful enough for still shots, especially macro. Here are a couple of samples:
