Featured Underwater Photographer – Joseph Fabián Encinas Surco

One of the best ways to learn photography is to see other photographers’ work. Mozaik looks for some of the best underwater photographers in the world, and showcase their work, along with the gear they use, to help other aspiring photographers improve, learn new skills and get inspired.

This week we will feature the talented Joseph Fabián Encinas Surco!

About Joseph Fabián

I Was linked to the sea since I can remember, since I was very young I used to go with my godfather who is a lifeguard-police, every summer to the beach “Leon dormido” (Lima-Peru), I was always curious to know what were those animals that were on the rocks and in the water while I was learning to swim. From that moment on I wanted to know more and more about the species that lived in the depths. Years went by, my curiosities intensified and became more concrete when I decided to study Biological Sciences at the Universidad Nacional Federico Villarreal (Peru).

My beginnings in diving were in apnea and because of the need to be able to stay underwater longer to appreciate the diversity, I started the adventure of scuba diving and also photography since I liked to record everything I saw since I was a child. I am constantly training myself to improve my knowledge, my technique in diving, photography and science. For these reasons I decided to specialize in marine biology and continental/marine hydrobiology, MSc in Environmental Management, certified scientific diver and since 2018 I am a PADI diving instructor.

My favorite photography is macro for small marine invertebrates and my goal is to make known the diversity found in our oceans and raise awareness about the current environmental issues and how our actions are reflected positively or negatively.  Because of that I decided to create a web page called NUDIDEEP (in allusion to nudibranchs, which are my favorite species), where through my photographs I teach about the biology, characteristics, habitat and status of the different marine species.

Joseph Fabián’s Gear

My beginnings in photography were with a Sony CyberShot DSC W200 with Sony Underwater Housing. Currently, I use the Olympus TG-6 with PT-059 underwater housing, an Inon S-2000 strobe light and also the Canon G7X Mark II.
