Inon UCL-165 Macro Lens Stacked Review and Samples
The Inon UCL-165 has been one of the most popular macro lenses for underwater in the past few years.
The lens, which has a focal length of 165mm creates a magnified image by shortening the minimal focus length determined by the camera lens when zoomed in thus making the subject appear larger on the sensor.
A single lens yields a magnification equivalent to a +6 diopter, which is great for capturing small critters, but many start out with a single lens knowing that they can add a second one in the future once they master the difficulties of focusing and shooting with a macro lens underwater.
Adding a second lens works surprisingly well and creates a new lens equivalent to a +12 diopter and capable of sharp super macro shots.
Here are some samples shots taken in the Red Sea with 2 x UCL-165 stacked on a Canon S110 used at full zoom:

Is it useful for 90mm macro lens on Crop body?
Hmmm, hard to say. Yes, it will work, but perhaps it’s best to get a lens that is better accommodated to DSLR / Mirrorless, such as the Nauticam SMC or the Inon UCL-67. Those would probably produce better results!
Hi,
I’m a newbie. I’m wondering if I have to turn-on the macro mode of my camera when using this lens?
Hi Andrew, yes, you would need to turn on macro mode and zoom in on your camera when using a diopter.
