Nauticam Releases Underwater Housing for Sony RX100 VI (Mark 6)

The Sony RX100 series needs no introduction. They have led the compact camera market for several years, becoming increasingly popular among underwater photographers as well. Nauticam are the first to release an underwater housing for the Sony RX100 VI – the newest release by Sony to its successful compact line.

Sony RX100 VI Highlights

Sony has improved several features compared to the predecessor – RX100 Mark V.  The two most prominent changes are:

Extended zoom lens – 24-200mm

The main limitation of the RX100 series so far has been their limited zoom – x4 on the first models, then x3 on all newer models.

The RX100 VI comes with x8 zoom, a very impressive upgrade! Initially we were concerned that this would affect its usage underwater, since long zoom lenses are often hard to fit in a housing, but Nauticam managed to overcome that using their innovative N50 compact port system. The N50 port system offers a special rectangular port for the full zoom range of the lens, and a short port to fit wide angle lenses such as the WWL-1 without vignetting.

Touch Screen (Finally!)

As part of improving the controls on this model, Sony has included a rear touch screen which makes it easier to navigate the newly designed menu.

Other improvements include better AF, larger buffer size, improved image processor and a few more minor changes.

Nauticam NA-RX100VI Housing

Nauticam’s housing is an excellent, high end aluminum housing. To deal with the longer zoom lens, Nauticam implemented its N50 compact port system, which we already know from the G7XII and LX100 housings that came before.

The N50 port system allows full zoom with the bundles “standard port”. An optional “short port” is available for a perfect fit with wide angle wet lenses, minimizing vignetting and optimizing sharpness.

A Word on Macro

One of the downsides of the previous RX100 models that came before, and on most compact cameras used underwater for that matter, is the short working distance when shooting macro. The new RX100 VI lens, which reaches up to 200mm, will allow a much longer working distance when shooting with add-on diopters (macro lenses), while still getting plenty of magnification.

This will allow divers to capture those skittish critters which would have been difficult to shoot otherwise!

Nauticam offers a flip holder for macro lenses to be used on the standard port, and states that the short port can also be used for macro shooting with a diopter, zooming the lens up to 70mm.
