Panasonic has recently announced the release of the Lumix G7 Mirrorless Camera (DMC-G7).  This brand new camera, boasts the most important feature of shooting 4K video, is a close relative of it’s older brother – the GH4. While the GH4 is more oriented towards the professional videographer, the G7 is directed to the more enthusiast prosumer crowd, at a much more affordable price tag (MSRP $800 bundled with the 14-42mm/F3.5-F5.6  kit lens).

Underwater photographers have been dreaming of getting a complete GH4 underwater system but many were deterred by the pricey body and relative complexity of the camera’s features. The G7 fills that gap, bringing the 4K shooting down to earth and creating an all-around excellent imaging tool, both for stills and video.

Photographers will be thrilled with the 4K photo shooting option, allowing an incredible 30 fps burst shooting at 8MP and extraction of still shots at high quality from 4K video. Panasonic has done a great job improving the AF even at very low light (-4EV), with ultra fast focusing and burst shooting speeds with Continuous Auto Focus [AFC] of 6 frames per second.

Focus Peaking feature has been included to assist video shooters in getting precise focus and WiFi connectivity has been added to ease the transfer of photos and videos (great for viewing photos without opening the housing).

The Panasonic Lumix G7 will start shipping June and we expect housing manufacturers to start offering housings soon after.

Underwater housings for the Panasonic Lumix G7 will be available here.
