One of the best ways to learn photography is to see other photographers’ work. We try to find some of the best underwater photographers in the world, and showcase their work, along with the gear they use, to help other aspiring photographers improve, learn new skills and get inspired.
This week we will feature the talented Scott Portelli!
Scott Portelli is an international award winning underwater photographer. A member of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP), he is regarded as a leading professional in his field. Scott has spent thousands of hours in remote locations across the globe filming and photographing the underwater environment.
He was awarded at the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the year in London in 2016 and announced National winner of the Sony World Photography awards 2016 with his underwater image depicting the Australian Giant Cuttlefish aggregation.
He has dived in all corners, including Antarctica & Arctic, South Pacific, Indonesia, PNG, Philippines, Australia, Azores, Galapagos and has a passion for the ocean and an affinity with all its marine inhabitants.
An accredited licensed RPAS/UAV Pilot, Scott has worked on aerial projects for some of Australia’s most sort out tourism destinations. Working in extreme conditions, Scott’s photography and filming credits show above and below the surface.
Scott runs photography workshops and lectures to show enthusiasts and experts alike the best way to get the most out of their photography. On his tours he specializes in underwater and wildlife photography bringing the best tips and techniques for photographing in challenging locations.
I use a number of different rigs:
Canon 1DX MKII in a Seacam Housing with 45 degree view finder, 12 inch dome port, Ikelite DS-161 strobes, Sola Video Lights. 16-35mm wide, 8-15mm fisheye, 50mm, 100mm Macro
I also use a mirrorless set up provided by Olympus, EM1-MKII, Olympus underwater housing, Olympus Strobes. 60mm and 30mm Macro lenses, 8mm fisheye.
