Nikon D810 Announced!

Nikon D810

2 years after the release of the D800/E, Nikon have announced a new and improved successor for the D800 line – the D810.

The D810 is not meant as a groundbreaking revolution in the Full-Frame dSLR field, but represents a more mature and evolved version of the D800/E, maintaining the same high quality standards while implementing some more advanced features to the pro consumer’s delight.

One of the major advancements in the D810 is the new 36.3MP FX CMOS sensor, with no optical low-pass filter, designed for extreme sharpness, faster and more accurate AF and clearer images than previous sensors.

Filmmakers would be happy to learn that there has been some major upgrades in the video capabilities such as flat video profile, providing maximum quality and minimum on-camera processing, in order to better preserve quality in post production. The ability to display zebra stripes has been added to assist the user in getting the correct exposure. 2 microphones are mounted in the front for stereo audio recording. Auto ISO feature for video recording has been added while maintaining manual control over shutter and aperture, with smooth transitions between ISO. The D810 will be capable of producing extremely sharp 60p full-HD (1920 x 1080) movies.

Another cool feature that has been long waited by Nikon shooters is the ability to record small sized RAW images. The new sensor is capable of 64-12,800 ISO (expandable to ISO 32-51,200 via Lo / Hi).

This camera is going to be very popular with the pro and advanced underwater photographers in the following year and we shall patiently await for housing manufacturers to announce their support for this wonderful camera.

More great features according to Nikon’s website are listed below.

D810 Additional Features*

  • An electronic front-curtain shutter that prevents blur in images with minimization of vibration resulting from the operation of mechanisms with shooting
  • Highlight-weighted metering, with which exposure values that reduce loss of detail in highlights (blown highlights) are determined, convenient for capturing theater scenes and the like
  • The first Nikon FX-format camera with an OLED viewfinder display; an optical viewfinder with frame coverage of approximately 100% that offers better light transmissivity and colors, and makes it easier to achieve the optimal focus when fast lenses are used
  • A 1229k-dot LCD monitor with bright RGBW array equipped with the “Monitor color balance” function that allows users to adjust monitor colors
  • A “Split-screen display zoom” function that displays enlarged views of two separate areas of the frame side-by-side for checking level if the building is aligned with the horizon with live view photography
  • Advanced Scene Recognition System, which utilizes a 91K-pixel RGB sensor, for highly precise automatic control over auto exposure (AE), autofocus (AF), and auto white balance (AWB)
  • RAW recording at an image size of “Small”
  • Multi-area mode full-HD D-movie that allows users to choose between two movie formats (image areas), FX-based and DX-based
