It has a wide even beam and automatic light shut off when camera pre-flash is fired.

Good light.

Not as wide of a spread as I was expecting, which creates a bit of a hot spot while focusing. I have to aim the light slightly off of where I set the camera to focus.

The brightness seems sufficient for my local waters, but only for objects within a foot or so.

I don't quite understand the auto-off feature.  I disabled it by covering the sensor, as I was hoping to use the focus light as a small fill light too, but found that it didn't even show up when using my strobe.

One really nice touch - I'm always a little fearful of twist-on/off style lights. The nano is actually off when fully screwed down, and only turns on when you loosen it a bit. This is a nice safety feature, in my mind, as when it's off, you know it;s water tight.
